World Afro Hair Day

World Afro Hair Day

Today we celebrated World Afro Day.  It is a global day of change, education and celebration of Afro hair, culture and identity.  The day was created with the aim to normalise, empower and appreciate the natural hair of people from black and mixed-race ethnicities and to prevent discrimination based on hair.

Children had access to stories about Afro hair and celebrated this day.  Parents and guest speaker, Marie Howell, from the local community came into school to talk about the history and care of Afro hair.  Children and adults from our diverse cultures embraced wearing their hair in braids, cornrows, space buns, bantu knots and beaded hairstyles.
