World Book Day 2025
Books came alive today
This year’s World Book Week at St Joseph’s was a fun and creative celebration of reading, writing, and imagination! Throughout this week, children were inspired by our shared reading of the beautiful book How to Be a Lion by Ed Vere, and participated in a variety of activities celebrating the joy of literature.
The book’s theme explores the importance of kindness, individuality, and the strength found in being true to oneself. In honour of this inspiring book, our students from all year groups have been writing and performing their own poems, each inspired by the themes of courage, identity, friendship and kindness. It’s been a wonderful opportunity for everyone to express their ideas and feelings through poetry.
A special highlight of the week was a visit by writer Clare Harlow on World Book Day! Pupils had the unique opportunity to ask Clare questions about her book, the inspiration behind her characters and her journey as an author and writer. Clare, who has also been shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, then led a writing workshop with Year 6, where the children had the opportunity to work on their own writing with Clare’s guidance!
Adding to the excitement, children also dressed up as their favourite characters from traditional tales, bringing beloved characters like Little Red Riding Hood, the Big Bad Wolf, and the Three Little Pigs to life. The creativity and enthusiasm displayed in the costumes made for a colourful and vibrant celebration.
We are so proud of the enthusiasm and creativity shown by all our children during this special celebration of literature. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this week, and World Book Day, one to remember! If any pupils would like to purchase a copy of Clare Harlow’s book, it is available in all the local Waterstones stores.
Also, as part of World Book Day, all the teachers swapped classes and read to another class. Just before the end of the school day, teachers read and discussed some of their favourite stories. The children absolutely loved listening to the stories and enjoyed being read to by a different teacher!
