First News

FIRST NEWS

Our school subscription to First News allows us access to a PDF version of weekly editions of the newspaper as well as Comprehension tasks, Puzzles and Quizzes. These are available according to reading ability, explained below:

Level 1: ideal for those in Years 3 and 4 (and more confident readers in Year 2). The reading age of the news stories and accompanying activities is approximately 7 to 9 yrs. (The news stories are slightly simplified versions of those found in First News). The activities support pupils’ development of the statutory reading comprehension skills required by the end of KS2 and these are referenced in each activity.

Level 2: aimed primarily at those in Years 4, 5 and 6. The reading age of the news stories and accompanying activities is approximately 9 to 12 yrs. The activities support pupils’ development of the statutory reading comprehension skills required by the end of KS2 and these are referenced in each activity.

Level 3: For more confident readers from year 6, level 3 is for pupils working towards the requirements of the KS3. The reading age of the news stories and accompanying activities is approximately 12 to 14 yrs. The activities support pupils’ development of the reading comprehension skills required in the lead up to requirements for GCSE English Language.
