Crowning of Mary
For centuries, the Catholic Church has set aside the entire month of May to honour Mary, Mother of God. Not just a day in May, but the entire month. In medieval times, similar customs abounded, all centering around the practice of expelling winter, as May 1st was considered the start of new growth.
At St Joseph's today, children brought in flowers to honour Mary by laying them at her feet. We also crowned her with a wreath of fresh flowers and a placed a cloak around her. We also sang songs to Mary - 'As I kneel before you' and 'Immaculate Mary'. The children sang and behaved beautifully with reverence and contemplation.
