Year 6 & Windrush at the NMM

Year 6 visited The National Maritime Museum where they participated in a ‘Windrush’ workshop.  The workshop explored the story of The Windrush and the lives of the individuals who came over to Britain to support the rebuilding of the country after the Second World War.

This workshop focused on exploring different cultures and experiences, appreciating the hardships that many faced and reflecting on how we have moved forwards as a country to accepting others whilst hearing the true account of two ladies who came to this country during the Windrush era, one from Jamaica and one from Trinidad.

The workshop involved

  • Meeting elders from the Caribbean Social Forum
  • Exploring special cultural artefacts
  • Finding connections between the lives of school children today and people of an older generation
  • Making sound recordings to capture conversations and ideas which will be used a part of a rich  resource for future workshops.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the day and came away with new knowledge about this special time in history.
